Core Competence

Clas-Otto Wene is Professor Emeritus at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, where he held the chair of Energy Systems Technology from 1981 until 2000. He has worked 1997-2003 at the International Energy Agency in Paris with issues related to energy technology learning and technology markets. During this period he authored Experience Curves for Energy Technology Policy, co-authored Creating Markets for Energy Technologies, and initiated EXCETP, an international network on Experience Curves for Energy Technology Policy. Other major areas of competence are transparent processes in decisions on risk and the use of computer models to support decision processes. During the 90s he was co-leader for the Dialogue and RISCOM Pilot projects on the siting of a repository for nuclear waste. He has led numerous projects involving energy system models to support decisions in local and regional energy systems. He has also been engaged in front-running projects to link energy technology models to energy-economic models (e.g., Markal-Macro).

Wene obtained his PhD in Nuclear Physics from Lund University in 1974 and is also Associate Professor in Physics at that University. Wene received the Lindbohm Award from the Royal Swedish Academy of Science in 1981. Between 1986 and 1996 he was appointed by the Swedish Government to the National Council for Nuclear Waste.
In the 80s and 90s he spent several longer periods at research institutes in the United States, Germany and Austria developing energy systems analysis and energy models. Wene has published over sixty books and papers in scientific and professional journals.
